The Nebuladies Collection explores the idea of potential life that comes from nebulas and the potential life that women can create within. Nebulas are made up of space dust and gases, which doesn’t sound that impressive until you learn that they often are baby-star-making nurseries. Thousands of new stars just like our sun are being made, which means thousands of potential solar systems and planets are also created. It’s a violent process that can bring about destruction or potential life on a macro level.
Then I think about the potential for life within women. With the creation of a zygote on the micro level, there is the potential for devastation or life. All of the factors that need to be present on a macro or micro level need to work harmoniously to create successful life.
My artwork explores this comparison by taking the figure of a woman and combining it with the beauty of a star-making nebula. My positioning and layout is intentional. In Orion, the brightest gases where new stars are being born is over the abdomen of the woman. She is titled, Orion, because it is the Orion nebula that I used for this piece (try to find Orion’s belt). The iridescent and metallic paints of this piece allows it to change color in different light.
